So I’ve been shooting digitally for nearly 7 years now, and I do love the flexibility it allows on a wedding day. But – and here’s the but – I’m being slowly enticed back to the world of film and was very inspired after catching up with a lovely friend of mine last week, Renee, from Renee Caldwell Photography. Renee is a film photographer – one of the rare few who shoots only film. I know she does not own a digital camera. I was telling her how I’d bought a film camera on eBay for some ridiculously low cost, and it came with a standard wide angle lens and a little nifty fifty. The 50mm f/1.8 I was most interested in (a nice all rounder lens), so I snatched it up. I then bought some Portra 800 from Photo Continental when it arrived, jumped in the car and went to the park to practice. So I came home that day (which was months ago) and promptly forgot about the film. After my catch up with Renee and our inspiring chat, I remembered my film … so yesterday I dropped it into Allchromes at Bowen Hills for developing and the results below is what I got back. I love what I got – they’ve very grainy and I just what I expected. I could never achieve this sort of look digitally. All I did to them in photoshop was re-size for the web and add a border. I did no other editing! :) I would normally crop, straighten, fix blemishes, remove distractions, adjust colour and contrast etc. The below photos are perfect to me because they haven’t been manipulated digitally in any way … and I love that. Keep an eye out for some upcoming film sessions. Yeah! :)

Yesterday afternoon our little family celebrated my nephews 5th birthday up in sunny Toowoomba. I’d been looking forward to this party for weeks after ordering his minion piñata off eBay and knowing that my sister was going to make him a minion cake too.
This little guy has all of us wrapped around his little pinky, and for good reason! :) He is the most loving, sweet, thoughtful, gentle, funny and caring little boy, and I know he’s enriched all of our lives just being here. What I absolutely love about him though is the happiness and joy he finds in just being with his family and friends. Honestly – you could wrap him up a box of rocks as a present and he wouldn’t be able to contain his delight. He just loves to be loved and gives it back in return 110%.
To sum it up, yesterday was the best day spent celebrating his birthday. :) From present opening time, doing the chicken dance to the silly card that we bought him, putting his new Lego together with his big brothers, doing his zombie impression for me when asked, cracking himself up opening gifts, going around the table and giving every single person a hug and a kiss, reading his birthday cards with his daddy, smacking the sh*t out of the piñata, looting for candy, getting hugely excited when the blindfold was removed and he saw his minion cake, reaching out little fingers to gently touch his cake, playing with his new toys … lots of little memories from a big day. One that I’m so glad we were a part of and grateful to have these memories in pics. :) Hope you enjoy the photos!
