My film experiment

So I’ve been shooting digitally for nearly 7 years now, and I do love the flexibility it allows on a wedding day. But – and here’s the but – I’m being slowly enticed back to the world of film and was very inspired after catching up with a lovely friend of mine last week, Renee, from Renee Caldwell Photography. Renee is a film photographer – one of the rare few who shoots only film. I know she does not own a digital camera. I was telling her how I’d bought a film camera on eBay for some ridiculously low cost, and it came with a standard wide angle lens and a little nifty fifty. The 50mm f/1.8 I was most interested in (a nice all rounder lens), so I snatched it up. I then bought some Portra 800 from Photo Continental when it arrived, jumped in the car and went to the park to practice. So I came home that day (which was months ago) and promptly forgot about the film. After my catch up with Renee and our inspiring chat, I remembered my film … so yesterday I dropped it into Allchromes at Bowen Hills for developing and the results below is what I got back. I love what I got – they’ve very grainy and I just what I expected. I could never achieve this sort of look digitally. All I did to them in photoshop was re-size for the web and add a border. I did no other editing! :) I would normally crop, straighten, fix blemishes, remove distractions, adjust colour and contrast etc. The below photos are perfect to me because they haven’t been manipulated digitally in any way … and I love that. Keep an eye out for some upcoming film sessions. Yeah! :)
